Understanding Dual Diagnosis and Use of the Diagnostic Manual-Intellectual Disability 2 (DM-ID2)
Presented by Kim Shontz, LCSW/ICPN Director
People with an intellectual disability are often misdiagnosed with a mental illness. The DM-ID2 provides diagnostic criteria adapted for people with an intellectual disability. Use of the DM-ID2 can prevent the misdiagnosis of various disorders and the overuse of psychotropic medications, and provide information that can be shared with other professionals to promote accurate and appropriate treatment and interventions.
