This presentation will discuss the issues facing disability service providers as services continue to move away from institutionalization towards a more person-centered approach that recognizes men and woman with intellectual disabilities and mental illness need to live an ordinary life with the ability to make choices. The need to balance protection against the need to promote choice and independence will be explored as we challenge our perceptions, biases, and approaches to treatment. A discussion of professional issues that may be encountered as we promote a positive risk culture when serving people.
