Have you ever stopped to think, “Why are we so good at taking care of others, but not ourselves?” Studies show that a high percentage of mental health workers may be experiencing high levels of burnout. Mental Health workers also experience compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Studies also show that those same workers are only moderately engaging in self-care practices and only on a limited basis. Arguably, it is important to both be aware of this, as well as proactively take an approach to prioritize our own mental health.
Focusing on preventative measures can help us lead a happier, healthier lives. During this workshop we will review self-care studies and ideas. We will focus on identifying self-care methods unique to each individual person and how to best enact these methods of care to improve one’s life. We will review the balance between work, personal, and family stresses and develop practical plans. The plans will focus on recognizing the deficits in each area and how to build them back up. This workshop will help those actively engaged in the helping profession recognize the need for self- care including the types of self-care as well as how we can develop a self-care plan.

Part I of this series will explore the Latino community in the United States today, specifically in the ID/DD community. This discussion will start by dispelling some commonly held myths/ stereotypes while providing information regarding the immigrant experience including the possible trauma that may occur during the acculturation process. The majority of the workshop will entail a discussion on how mental health challenges and barriers can affect the supports and services we provide to people and families who are experiencing mental health and developmental disabilities. Evidence based and best practice interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as extensive case reviews and examples will be explored.

As family members, providers, and staff who support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we have a responsibility to provide the highest quality care to people in this vulnerable population. People with an intellectual disabilities are often misdiagnosed with a mental illness. The DM-ID2 provides diagnostic criteria adapted for people with an intellectual disability. Use of the DM-ID 2 can prevent the misdiagnosis of various disorders and the overuse of psychotropic medications, and provide information that can be shared with other professionals to promote accurate and appropriate treatment and interventions.
