Understanding Prader Willi Syndrome

Pradar Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder that not only affects a person’s physical development but impacts a person’s cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric functioning.

This webinar will provide participants with an overview regarding PWS and will discuss how the syndrome is diagnosed. In addition to this, common internal and external features of the syndrome will be identified.

The webinar will conclude with a discussion regarding treatment considerations and resources to provide further education regarding the topic.

Mike Jersey, MA, LPC, is the Clinical Director of the Illinois Crisis Prevention Network’s Support Services Team and has been a member of the team since its inception in 2010. The Illinois Crisis Prevention Network is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services and works to support individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities experiencing behavioral and/or medical challenges. Prior to his work with the ICPN, Mike has supervised residential settings for adults diagnosed with a severe mental illness and adolescents diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities that were wards of the state of Illinois.

Scrub a Dub Dub: Showering Combative Seniors

The number of seniors is increasing. By 2030, there will be nearly 1.5 million seniors with ID/DD. Whether they have memory issues or not, seniors may have difficulty taking showers. In this live webinar, learn more about reasons why these challenging behaviors may occur during the shower. Presenters will also review first line behavioral interventions on how to address these uncooperative behaviors.

Dr. Maranda A. Trahan, PhD, BCBA-D
Amanda Ripley, MS, BCBA

Dr. Trahan is an expert in the assessment and management of challenging dementia symptoms, like aggression, noncompliance, and verbal disruptions. She was born in Louisiana, attended SIUC for graduate school, and completed a postdoc at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. She lived in Florida and started one of the first private practices in ABA and Dementia Care before returning to Illinois in late 2018. Dr. Trahan likes to be outside, spending time with her family and animals.

Amanda Ripley has worked with individuals with challenging behaviors across the life span, including children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Amanda is from Chicago, graduated with her master’s degree from SIUC, and worked in a several states providing ABA services, including Michigan, Colorado, and Illinois. Amanda likes to run and play outside with her kids and husband.

Trauma Informed Care: What Is It and What Can We Do About It?

A person’s behavior is shaped and learned through their experiences and interactions with others in their environments. Challenging behaviors that are difficult to manage may emerge when that person’s behavior has been shaped by traumatic experiences. For people with developmental disabilities traumatic experiences may be hidden and only show signs of existence when challenging behavior emerges.

This training will discuss trauma and how it may present in people diagnosed with developmental disabilities. Moreover, this training will discuss strategies for supporting people touched by traumatic experiences including current and relevant situations such as natural disasters and pandemics.

The Quest to Make Every Interaction Count

Allison Chamberlain, M.S., BCBA is a case manager of the Illinois Crisis Prevention Network’s (ICPN) Support Services Team in Carbondale, Illinois. The Illinois Crisis Prevention Network is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services and provides services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities experiencing behavioral and/or medical challenges in their current residential setting. Prior to her work with ICPN, Allison previously served as the Clinical Supervisor at Project 12-Ways, which provides in home behavioral services to families with a history or serious risk of abuse and/or neglect.
